Mazirbe evangelical lutheran church

The first wooden church in Mazirbe - the Irbe church- was erected in 1766. The owner of the Dundaga manor Theodor von der Osten-Sacken laid the foundation stone of the masonry church that was consecrated in 1868. A German building foreman A. Schrott headed the construction process, but local craftsmen did the building works.

The rectangular elongated building has a polygonal apse and a tall, high square tower with polygonal spire. During the World War I (1914/1916) Russian artillery blew up the church tower, it was renovated in 1927. The tower rises majestically to the sky, it is 36 meters high and was used by the sailors of the international track for determining the location of their ships in Irbe Strait.

In 1964 the church was expropriated. It experienced desolation and vandalism, but the third Awakening brought the renewal of Mazirbe church (1985-1988, 1997).

The author of the altar painting "Christ and Saint Peter on the Sea"(1993) is Gunta Liepiņa-Grīva.

It is one of the most beautiful churches in Kurzeme. It is special because of its tall, fine proportions, aesthetic quality and picturesque image.
