Slitere National Park spreads over the territory of Dundaga municipality. 13 European-scale specially protected nature areas are located in the territories of North Kurzeme local municipalities.

Slitere national park is the second oldest protected territory in Latvia. In 1921 the 1100 hectare large territory at the foot of Slitere Blue hills was marked as  a nature monument, whereas today the territory of the park has reached 16 000 hectares.

The territory of Slitere national park can be considered as a history museum of the formation of the Baltic Sea. Herethe traits left from different periods of the development of the Baltic Sea can be seen. Dam-like dunes (kangar) and inter-dam lowlands (vigas) give evidence of the times of Ancilus Lake and the Litorinian Sea. Slitere Blue hills slope is the ancient bank from the oldest stage of the sea development - Baltic Ice Lake. Slitere national park is one of the richest territories on the Baltic Sea coast in terms of the diversity of nature.

Visitors to the park can take an advantage of climbing up Slītere lighthouse, which is the second oldest in Latvia and take a walk along the nature path getting acquainted with the original and diverse flora. One can also take a longer walk along Pēterezeri lake nature path or watch the sunrise from Ēvaži steep bank, which is one of the highest on the shore of Riga Gulf. It is also possible to view the always changing Cape Kolka, which gathers thousands of birds in springs and autumns.

The Slītere National Park features several other hikes, as well as bike, water and auto routes.
