The characteristic features of the North Kurzeme are large tracts of forest, bogs and wet grasslands, vast spread of boulders.

Forests cover 69% of the territory of Dundaga municipality, being the utmost treasure here. Not only can they be used for forestry and timber production, also picking mushrooms and berries, hunting and recreation is possible here.

A significant treasure of the region is the coast of the Baltic Sea with its picturesque and specific nature, as well as the possibility of fishing there. For long time - during the so called Soviet times - the coastal territory used to be the restricted area even for the inhabitants of Ventspils and Talsi districts because of the location of the Soviet army there - the troops of frontier guards, air defence, Ventspils cosmic reconnaissance centre (in Irbene), as well as military firing grounds.

Slitere National Park spreads over the territory of Dundaga municipality. 13 European-scale specially protected nature areas are located in the territories of North Kurzeme local municipalities.
